Surge of existential questions: A group of people, locked in a room, the last place of refuge before the great catastrophe. A room, which only offers safety for a limited time. New structures and order become established. What remains after the collapse? How do we manage to create our world again and again? What is worthwhile saving?
In her present piece, „Gezeiten", Sasha Waltz, together with her new ensemble of 16 male and female dancers, deals with the interdependency between destruction and re-creation and the transformations life is permanently subjected to, physically as much as metaphysically. The new production marks a further development in the right direction for Sasha Waltz, who here joins the concreteness and surreal image-world from her earlier pieces with the abstraction and dance dynamic of her most recent work.
Pioneer: In the last few years, hardly any other choreographer in the field of contemporary dance has proved as influential, also structurally, as Sasha Waltz. With legendary choreographies such as „Allee der Kosmonauten" or the new opera project „Dido & Aeneas". But also as first, and extremely successful, co-director for dance in a German ensemble and repertory theatre – from 1999 until 2004, she was, together with Jochen Sandig, in the artistic management team of the „Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz". The independent company, Sasha Waltz & Guests, has since become again the focus of her work. By the way, not a company in the conventional way but a network of associated artists from 25 countries: architects, artists, choreographers, filmmakers, musicians, actors and dancers who have found a form of artistically working together, and have made Sasha Waltz & Guests one of the most internationally productive and distinguished arts organisations.
