Aszure Barton
Vita
Barton, who founded Aszure Barton & Artists (AB&A) in the early 2000s as an expression of her refusal to wait for permission, has reimagined the traditional choreographer-company model, building what she calls „a mobile home for trusted humans“ – a responsive, living ecosystem shaped by trust and creative inclusion.
On top of her work for AB&A, Barton has created commissions worldwide for celebrated institutions including Nederlands Dans Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Martha Graham Dance Company, Bavarian State Ballet, English National Ballet, Sydney Dance Company, Teatro alla Scala, and San Francisco Ballet. She currently serves as artist in residence at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and has previously held the same position at Mikhail Baryshnikov’s arts center, where she collaborated directly with Baryshnikov himself. In Canada, Barton was honored with the prestigious Arts & Letters Award and appointed Official Ambassador of Contemporary Choreography. She also won a Bessie Award for BUSK with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.
