Description
Adding a new colour to the Gauthier Dance palette: with its fairy-tale storytelling, magic and puppet tricks and plenty of interaction with the audience, Barker is in fact the company's first production aimed at an audience of all generations. This openness is part of the concept, starting with the choice of venue. The setting in the Theaterhaus sports hall, with stands on three sides, allows for future mobile performances. The production is being realised by a proven „dream team“ – Barak Marshall and the Gauthier Dance JUNIORS.
As choreographer, the Gauthier Dance artist in residence has exactly what it takes for this task: an affinity for physical theatre and his very own signature style, which focuses on expressivity and clear gestures. With a wink, he himself calls his style „full-body sign language“.
Like at a funfair, „Barker“ Marshall delivers the promised attractions in the form of an exciting, extremely entertaining story. Inspired by the wild plots of vaudeville theatre, Marshall tells of disobedience: six young servants rebel against their evil mistress Mrs Siegrun, who is always invisible to the audience. The choreographer comments: „Basically, we all have someone who is above us in the hierarchy and whom we serve. Many of my pieces revolve around this theme. How can people succeed in developing their full, authentic voice? After all, the desire for freedom can never be suppressed in the long term.“
It goes without saying that Barak Marshall does not stage a gloomy social drama, but the eccentric, always hopeful adventure of a new beginning. Set to the lively music of the Balkans, this boisterous tale uses slapstick, pantomime and a great deal of humour. Above all, however, it brings to life on stage what people are looking for in theatre: pure magic.
