Anthems

Description

Double bill with the choreographies "Barker" & "Harry" by Barak Marshall

The first of the season's two double bills features works by Artist in Residence Barak Marshall. And in this case, double really means double! Because Anthems not only combines two choreographies, but also both companies.

Piece number 1 for the JUNIORS was only recently premiered at the COLOURS Festival, as the first ever family production of Gauthier Dance. With great success! Children, adults, the press – everyone loved it! With slapstick, humour, fairy-tale hyperbole and plenty of audience interaction, Barker tells the story of a successful rebellion. Six servants join forces to fight back against their oppressive mistress, Mrs Siegrun. For COLOURS, Barker was deliberately staged in the setting of the Theaterhaus sports hall. After all, the play will be touring the region's school gyms extensively during the 2025/26 season ... In the context of Anthems, Barker will be newly adapted for the largest Theaterhaus hall T1.

Piece number 2 of the double bill was created in 2012 as part of the 40th anniversary programme of the renowned Canadian company Ballets Jazz Montréal and is one of the choreographer's most acclaimed works. Harry not only bursts with the joy of dancing and storytelling. The buoyant, ultimately danceable soundtrack with swing from the 1920s and 1930s is also unmistakably Barak Marshall. 14 years after the premiere, he will now revisit this early work and tailor it to the 16 dancers of the main company. In any case, Gauthier Dance can look forward to a passionate and humorous piece of dance theatre. Originally it was to be called The 9 Lives of Harry Fleischman – and this title describes the plot pretty accurately. In order to be united with the love of his life, Harry defies the gods and fate. Not even his repeated deaths can stop him. Resist the powers that want to constrict you – and follow your heart. This „anthem to humanity“ connects Harry and Barker. And sums up Marshall's deep conviction that freedom is worth fighting for.
